design input involved initial schematics (which were not developed), some planting, drainage, details and materials, landscape architect of record

The Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on the third floor of Alta Bates Hospital can be a stressful environment for parents and staff. An adjoining unused roof terrace presented the opportunity for a therapeutic outdoor garden that provides relief from the often intense hospital environment. Design constraints included an existing raised planting bed, limited rooftop drainage, and strict weight limitations.

Over the course of 2 years the design direction changed several times. The final layout provided a more economical and weight-saving alternative to interim proposed schemes, and was similar in approach to our first sketches which were initially rejected.
